Location: Mildale Farm
The grooms donned nature-inspired boutonnieres. Their florist gathered elements like sweetgum leaf and grass seed heads.
The couple had originally planned on an urban location, but fell in love with Mildale Farm, close to where Patrick spent most of his childhood. “The equestrian barn provided the perfect balance of a casual, yet glorious backdrop for our vision of the event,” says Ed.
A few hours before the reception, the grooms’ families surprised the couple with a handmade album containing photos of them that documented their childhoods and their relationship.
Small stoneware cups were perfect for the butternut squash soup shooters served during the cocktail hour.
Love quotes were printed on neutral table numbers, which were placed in quarter rounds of rustic French bread.
Vintage stoneware in various earth-toned patterns brought pops of color to the white cotton and linen burlap-covered tables.
Shallow terra cotta saucers allowed for low-profile arrangements of roses accented by natural elements like eucalyptus, twigs and various grasses and greenery.
Six single-tiered cakes sat atop wooden cake stands adorned in twigs.
Ed and Patrick wanted some regional swing/jazz flavor in their entertainment. Kansas City musicians AnnaLee and the Lucky So-and-So’s performed “Somewhere over the Rainbow” for the couple’s first dance.
On the candy table, a contemporary glass vase filled with Manzanita branches complemented the natural elements of the barn.
You can always count on a good martini to break the ice, especially when the menu describes it as being “on the dark side of good behavior.” That was enough to intrigue two patrons at a new martini bar in Columbus, Ohio. Both Patrick and Ed ordered the cocktail and struck up a conversation that led to love.

The Date October 18

They dated for more than two years before Ed proposed at Patrick’s family’s annual Christmas party. The couple soon began planning a four-year-long celebration, including a series of cocktail parties across the United States, then a private wedding ceremony in Big Sur in 2007, and ending with a traditional reception near Patrick’s hometown in Kansas.
